Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about high-efficiency motors (IE4/IE5), WFSM, high-speed motors, and custom design.

What kind of company is EMECS?

EMECS is a high-efficiency motor design company founded by an expert who served 20 years as a principal researcher at KERI (Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute). Based in Geumjeong-gu, Busan, EMECS custom-designs three-phase induction motors, high-speed motors, and WFSM based on experience from 50+ national R&D projects.

What is an IE5 motor?

IE5 is the ultra-premium class, the highest motor energy-efficiency class defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Losses decrease as the class rises from IE1 (standard) to IE5. EMECS designs IE5-class motors and delivered one to KERI in 2026, with a performance demonstration in preparation.

What are the benefits of replacing an IE3 motor with IE5?

Replacing a widely used IE3 (premium) motor with an IE5 (ultra-premium) motor reduces losses, cutting electricity costs by up to 30% and lowering carbon emissions accordingly. Actual savings depend on operating hours, load factor, and site conditions, so EMECS provides an efficiency assessment before replacement to estimate the expected savings.

What is EMECS's track record?

EMECS delivered an IE5-class high-efficiency motor to KERI (Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute) in 2026 and is preparing a performance demonstration. The founder has carried out more than 50 national R&D projects, which form the foundation of EMECS's design technology.

What is a WFSM and why is it rare-earth-free?

A WFSM (Wound Field Synchronous Motor) generates magnetic flux with field windings (electromagnets) instead of rare-earth permanent magnets. It is free from rare-earth supply risks and price volatility, allows power-factor control, and EMECS designs IE5-class ultra-high-efficiency WFSMs.

Where are high-speed motors used?

EMECS designs high-speed motors up to 50,000 RPM for industrial equipment requiring high rotational speed, such as turbo blowers, high-speed compressors, and spindles. The key is integrated electromagnetic and mechanical design that reduces losses and vibration at high speed.

How does the custom motor design process work?

EMECS's custom design proceeds in four steps: (1) consultation and requirements analysis, (2) design and simulation verification, (3) prototype manufacturing and performance testing, and (4) delivery and technical support. Performance is verified with simulation and measured data at each step.

Can EMECS build prototypes or small quantities?

Yes. EMECS builds prototypes of its designed motors and verifies their performance — from R&D prototypes for research institutes and companies to pre-production validation units.

Where is EMECS located and how can I contact you?

EMECS is located at 6F, 132 Oncheonjang-ro, Geumjeong-gu, Busan, Republic of Korea. Contact us at +82-51-714-4061 or yhkoo@emecs.kr. Office hours are weekdays 09:00–18:00 (KST).

Do you offer efficiency assessment and improvement consulting for existing motors?

Yes. EMECS analyzes the efficiency of existing motors and proposes improvements. Based on the assessment, we recommend the most cost-effective option among redesign, replacement with IE4/IE5-class motors, or operational improvements.
